Rock – Cut Architecture

One of the most astonishing buildings in the world is those cut from a single rock. Rock-cut Architecture, buildings can be found all over the world. The rock-cut Architecture differs from traditional buildings in many ways and they are more similar to sculpture than Architecture as structures were produced by cutting out solid rocks. In India Rock-cut architecture occupies a very important place in the history of Indian Architecture. These structures present the most spectacular piece of ancient Indian art and are widely associated with various religions and religious activities. Some prominent rock-cut structures of ancient India are Chaityas, Viharas, temples etc. All of these structures have some common features, yet it can be clearly seen that as time progressed the rock-cutters improved all the time, gaining confidence and mastery over the material to produce outstanding structures.
